| Request:Micheal/Fi clips? |
[19 Jul 2009|10:34pm] |
Hi everyone! :) I love BN, and if this isn't allowed feel free to remove it mods, but I have a request. I was wondering if anyone could lead me to some Michael/Fi video clips because I'm putting together a new fanvid and I'm coming up short on footage(I know how to get entire episodes, but with work I don't have the time to download them all, especially if I know I only need the Mike/Fi portions). So if anyone could point me in the right direction for what I'm looking for, I would be so grateful. If not, no problem. :)
I've already done one BN video. It's short, sucky and nonsensical. ^_^

| Really wanting to start freelancing, but finding every excuse not to (as a student) |
[18 Jul 2009|01:55pm] |
Hey everyone, this question is probably going to be really long and involved, so bear with me. I'm a student and am really wanting to do some freelancing on the side, but I seem to be stuck in several places when it comes to getting to the point where I'm comfortable dipping my toe in. Summer classes are very relaxing this term, so I've sort of made it my little side-project to finally reach this goal I have, while my academic responsibilities are somewhat in a lull.
This has been a desire of mine for a year or two now, and I keep finding ways to not do it for one reason or another. "Oh, I'll just read one more book/manual/post about all this, and then I'll know enough!" or "After I do this, then maybe I can really start freelancing." or "Once my website, business card, logo, contract, letterheads, invoices are all designed and printed, THEN it's time!" That sort of thing. And I'd like for it to stop, so I'm trying to identify why I'm holding myself back from just leaping into it all.
There are some things I needn't worry about, such as having a good solid set of (always developing) design skills and knowing my way around Adobe programs quite well. But then issue of being able to give estimates to someone arises because I've never timed myself designing x, y, or z, and feel like it'd take forever making mock projects to get an idea for every type of project.
Also, a lot of what's out there seems geared toward a) people that aren't in school and/or b) people that intend to make most of their living by freelancing. And I'm able to somewhat tailor this to my needs, but then I wonder if my hourly rate is too low? (I don't have any other student friends who freelance so I'm not sure where to compare.)
Another issue is approaching businesses as possible new clients. There are several local business really close to where I live that I'm really wanting to approach and sell my services to, but part of my problem is that I'm feeling a bit paralyzed in regards to just approaching them to begin with. How will I do it? What will I say? What should I bring? Where will I go to get it printed? (How does one find a reputable, good printer to begin with, too? What constitutes a "good printer"? And further, how do I find out how to print cost-effectively if I haven't taken many jobs to printers to begin with?) And then I start feeling like my portfolio isn't fleshed out as well as I'd like, and then get into thoughts like, "Well, if I just do another mock project or two, then maybe I'll be ready to freelance." So it's this endless cycle, where I don't end up moving closer to what I want.
But maybe I'm just over-thinking this whole thing, haha, which very well could be the case. It's just that I have all these questions and don't yet have any sort of of mentor/experienced designer to turn to, hence why I'm posting here. I'd just prefer to have this knowledge available to me, as I feel it is something that would provide an opportunity to make some income doing design and interacting with clients for that reason, rather than working in a coffee shop or whatever (which is something I'd rather not do a second time around, if I can help it). So if anyone is able to at least pull me in a new direction, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

| Design market in North Carolina? |
[18 Jul 2009|02:13pm] |
My boyfriend and I are both graphic designers - except that I just graduated in June and he graduated two years ago. He works for a company that will be relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina around October. Sure, he'll have a secure job, but I was wondering if anybody knew how well the graphic design market was down there? Is it rough to find a job or will I have better luck than my current state, Ohio?
I am currently working as an intern for a company up here that might lead somewhere, but I wasn't sure if moving down there would make it easier or more difficult to find a design job or at least some free lance work?

I'm pretty new to this Community and I'm a lil new to "Burn Notice." I don't know if we're allowed to ask these questions, so you can delete if not. I was just wonderin' what episode it was where Mike thought Fi was killed in the house fire? I looked for it, but no luck. Thank you!- Traci!

| Tips on designing Money? |
[17 Jul 2009|04:22pm] |
I have kind of a weird question, but I'm sure you guys can help.
I have a customer who wants me to design a gift certificate, but he wants it to look like a $100 bill. I'm a fairly new designer, and just fell into this line of work despite not having any schooling, so I am not sure what the laws are on creating something that resembles money. So that would be my first question: how close to money can I get before it becomes a problem?
Second, he really wants the flourishes you see on money, the baroque style ornaments you see in the corners, etc. I am not an illustrator, so I have to rely on third party sites to obtain graphics that detailed, but I have no idea where to find this stuff. I'd like to find it on a site that allows use of graphics for free, but even if he has to pay for them, I'm not sure where to look for something like that. I'd like to find it in vector format if at all possible. I've tried iStockPhoto, but they just don't seem to have what I need, nor does StockXChng.
Have any of you designed anything like this before? Any tips would be so very appreciated!

| Photoshop Plugin - Extracting/removing backgrounds? |
[17 Jul 2009|11:33am] |
Hi guys, I wanted to thank you again for how much help you've been in the past.
I was wondering if anyone knows of some good Photoshop Plugins for extracting or removing backgrounds. I found one called Mask Pro that looked great, but it won't run with my OS (Mac 10.4.11) or PS version (CS2 9.0x196).
The specific issue is that I constantly cut out photos of people with flowing hair, so I need more than what the magnetic lasso tool has to offer. My company's pretty cheap (hence why they've hired someone inexperienced to do this sort of thing), so I doubt they'd go for any software that was more than a couple hundred of dollars, at most. If anyone has some good ones, I'd love to check them out.
Thanks a lot!

Hi guys, I couldn't see anything in the tags about invoing - sorry if I've missed something.
I've recently been made redundant and am doing some freelance work on the side (I've done it previously as well, not just starting out). Previously a lot of work has been for friends and friends of the family, so they've just paid me straight up. However, recently I've been doing design for people who aren't, and they would like invoices for the design work I've undertaken.
My question is how the hell do I go about that?! I don't have a company name, so it's not like I can draw up an official document. Or do I just write my name at the top where a logo would normally go? Eeeek, help please!
TIA ♥

| Submitting Microsoft Word Resumes |
[16 Jul 2009|08:11am] |
So I am applying for jobs, and it seems like plenty of sites will only let you upload word resumes or do that copy and paste thing. It almost makes me not want to apply if they can't see the actual resume I worked so hard to design!
What do you guys think about that whole thing?

| Copyright -- Can I Keep my files? |
[15 Jul 2009|01:38pm] |
Hello all!
I had a quick question -- currently I work at a pretty small marketing agency (direct mail mostly) and may be going away to college pretty soon, I wasn't hired as a designer but rather a production assistant and they later realized that I had some skill in the graphic design area and began having me doing only that. I never got any pay change or other upgrade.
I am now curious if/when I leave legally do I have the right to take all of my original .psd and .ai files with me leaving them with only the .pdf's they used to print the files or am i obligated to leave the original files with company since it is where I created them?
Thanks for your time!

[15 Jul 2009|02:02pm] |
I looked in the archive and couldn't find a posting for this (is there a way to search the archive? i couldn't find one..)
a friend recently used one of those paid online services that make a font out of your handwriting.. (he used www.yourfonts.com and had no complaints) but i'm wondering if there are any open-source programs out there you can dl that lets you do it yourself? there must be..right?
thanks!

| Advice on studying abroad |
[14 Jul 2009|11:16pm] |
I'm going into my junior year at Pacific Northwest College of Art, and started talking to my advisor today about opportunities to study abroad. Basically it boils down to two schools that will work with my academic plan that PNCA is affiliated with: Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland, and Universiti Teknologi MARA, or UiTM, in Malaysia (near Kuala Lumpur). Has anyone had experience with these schools? I feel like Zurich would provide a program that would push me further as a designer, but UiTM would be an experience in a completely different type of culture and type of design. Zurich is very expensive (Switzerland is the third most expensive country in Europe), while Malaysia is ridiculously cheap (I was told by the advisor to expect to spend around $300 for living expenses for an entire SEMESTER abroad, I don't know how true this is). As a side note, student housing is not provided for these programs, I have to research and work with the schools to secure this ahead of time. Can anyone recommend good websites or programs for cheap housing (especially in Switzerland)?
